GM built its new pickup interface as a single scalable software platform

General Motors unveiled a new vehicle user interface on September 15, debuting on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickups before expanding across its portfolio. The company described the system as “a single scalable foundation” spanning electric, gas and diesel vehicles.

In a companion question-and-answer piece published the same day, GM called it a scalable design system and software platform built from common components. Michael Wahlstrom, executive director of software product management, presented the benefit as a future one, saying the approach “allows us to focus on building new features and experiences and spend less time redeploying the same UI to each unique screen configuration.” That piece put the display area at roughly 60 inches with local backlight dimming, and described the result as the company’s most instrumented platform.

A split-view home screen carries an interactive map alongside trailering metrics, fuel efficiency or media, and cluster layouts change with trailering, off-road and Super Cruise modes. A three-dimensional driving visualization renders surrounding traffic, lane markings and road objects while Super Cruise is engaged, and adaptive cruise control and Super Cruise engage on a single button press.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated with the native system in split-view card windows alongside native applications. In the question-and-answer piece, GM said it had “integrated the experience more deeply than ever before.” Google Gemini, Google Maps and Google Play are built in, and OnStar powers native truck applications including mobile trailer light checks.

GM said the interface will evolve through continuous over-the-air updates. Wahlstrom and Sebastian Bauer, executive director of human interface design, were named in that piece as the executives who own it.

Neither document named a system-on-chip, operating system or middleware. The press release marked each of its images as showing a pre-production vehicle, and neither document gave a start of production beyond the 2027 model year.
